My favorite fall holidays are Halloween and Day of the Dead, although I don’t know much about Day of the Dead or celebrate it like Mexicans do.
Who doesn’t like Halloween? NVM, I don’t want to know lol. Halloween seems to be a dying holiday and that really sucks! I love Halloween! I liked trick or treating as a child, taking my kids out and watching how much fun they were having, seeing all the adorable little kids dressed up in cute little costumes, and the “Spooky” ones the older kids had on. For the last 10 or so years, it just seems there are less and less children going out and that makes me sad; it’s like a right as a child!

Halloween, I think, is one of the few holidays that are actually celebrated on the exact same date every year; October 31st. Christmas, New Years, St Patrick’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and Canada Day I think are the only ones, the rest are a specific wknd (eg. the second wknd of the month) or a specific time of year like Easter.
For those who don’t know, Halloween was originally a Celtic celebration called Samhain (pronounced Sow-win). They dressed up and danced around a bonfire to ward off ghosts. Over time, it became Halloween (from All Hallow’s Eve) and children started dressing up and trick-or-treating and doing all the other fun Halloween stuff. Of course, All Saints Day follows on November 1, where they celebrated Saints. I believe this was more of a Catholic thing though.

Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is celebrated on Nov 1. This holiday is celebrated when the veil between the physical and spiritual realms is the thinnest, which makes it easier for us to communicate with each other, celebrate, and enjoy a brief reunion. Seems like a fun time to me, unless you get that unliked relative lol!
Obviously, there is so much more to these two holidays, but I didn’t want to get into it all, so I gave an “in a nutshell” version.
Enjoy the Spooky Season!
